Programme of Events
I'm looking forward to showing you around Saltaire. We will look around the enormous former woollen mill (now contains shops, restaurants and art galleries) and the surrounding houses and other buildings in Saltaire village, all built by the Victorian industrialist Titus Salt for his workers, 170 years ago; it is now a World Heritage Site. For those who want more exercise, in the afternoon we may also offer a short countryside walk along the canal and river, and back through the park, if the weather is fine.
We will meet at Saltaire railway station, at 10.40am. There is a train from Leeds at 10.26 and one from Bradford Forster Square station at 10.11. It is the Skipton train, but be careful if you get an earlier train: not all trains that go to Skipton stop at Saltaire! Also be careful because Saltaire station is very soon (2 minutes) after Shipley station.
Train is by far the easiest way to get to Saltaire, but if you definitely want to use the bus, contact me and I can suggest how you can get there.
If Saltaire church is open, we will visit it first. Please be prepared to give some coins as a donation in the church. However, apart from this, no other entrance fees are required during the day. There are several pubs and cafes where you can get a drink or lunch (or bring a packed lunch to eat outdoors).
This is a "just turn up" event, but, as usual, it helps us to know if you intend to come along. For those of you who attend the Wednesday events at Leeds Uni, I will be giving you a presentation (short talk and DVD) on Saltaire this coming Wednesday (30th November). It will help enormously if you attend this presentation.
