Practising German

Members have the opportunity to chat in German before our monthly meetings and to put questions to our visiting speakers.

Kaffee und Kuchen: These conversation sessions, held on-line twice a month on Friday afternoons from 4pm until 5.30pm, are open to all members and their friends who would like to practise speaking German. The first half of each session is for general conversation and news, and during the second half a specific topic is considered. Participants are split into smaller groups as and when appropriate. Anglo-German On-line Meetings: These meetings between WGC members and their friends in Germany take place in the early evening about four times per year. In contrast to Kaffee und Kuchen (above), there are roughly the same number of participants in Germany as in the UK and conversations are in German and English, whichever the speaker is happier using – many can chat happily in both. These meetings are to strengthen friendship links between WGC and Germany and discussion topics will include what is in the news in both countries at the time of the meeting. Several WGC members also take part in a monthly German Language Café, organised by Leeds German Club. This takes place on the first Monday of the month from 10am till noon at the Queen’s Arms, Harrogate Road, Chapel Allerton, Leeds, LS7 3PT.

Our current series of 8 online German lessons for members of the WGC  began in mid September 2024. The lessons are held at 5.30pm on Thursdays. Please contact us if you are interested.

There is ample opportunity to practise the language on our occasional trips to Germany.
